Hamburg is not only one of Germany’s largest and most welcoming cities, it’s also home to a whole host of annual festivals. With everything from music festivals to celebrations of film and art, you’re sure to find an event to suit your tastes in the city of Hamburg. No matter what time of the year you choose to visit, you’re sure to find some cultural events to enthral on the streets of Hamburg.

In May of every year, Hamburg celebrates the birthday of its famous harbour with a variety of special events, performances and a ship parade. The party, called the Hafengeburtstag, attracts billions of visitors, all keen to take part in the festivities.

Another of Hamburg’s most famous attractions has to be the Hamburger Dom. This fair is one of the largest in Germany and takes place three times a year, in spring, summer and early winter, and lasts for a month each time. It’s an excellent place to cut loose and spend some time browsing stalls, trying out festive food or testing your bravery on a variety of rides.

If you visit during April, you’ll also have the chance to enjoy some of Hamburg’s Easter celebrations, including a wonderful market at the Museum of Ethnology. On the other hand, you may be more interested in the No Mercy Heavy Metal Festival, which takes place at the Markthalle.

On the 19th of May you’ll have the chance to experience a little slice of Japan in Germany, when the Japanese community celebrates the cherry blossom festival (Kirschbl├╝tenfest) by the lake Alster. This welcoming gala is accompanied by some lovely fireworks displays.

Between late August and early September is the perfect time to travel if you are a firework fan, as this is when Hamburg hosts the International Fireworks Festival. You’ll also have the chance to check out the Alster Fair, where you’ll find a variety of artistic and theatrical performances to choose from.

From November onwards, you’ll discover that Hamburg is home to some excellent Christmas markets. The most popular include the Hanseatic Christmas Market and the Christmas Market Hamburg, and all provide a friendly and festive atmosphere.

If you’re planning to travel to visit one of the city’s many popular festivals, it’s a good idea to think about booking your accommodation far in advance. Hotels in Hamburg can get very busy at peak times, so it’s best to play safe and book rooms ahead to make sure you can enjoy your holiday to the hilt.
